The Story

After years and years of martial arts and adventuring, I decided to go for the biggest adventure of them all – Motherhood. It was a lot more than I had bargained for.

I imagined a carefree pregnancy ending with a hike up a mountain to the summit; on arrival I would give birth under a spectacular sunset, hike back down and make it in time for dinner (not really, but sort of).

Instead I ended up bedridden, nauseated, operated on for a hernia going into my third trimester, then sick with an unknown malady for months until doctors discovered I had a bad strep infection. And that’s only part of it.

During all this I couldn’t help but notice the conspicuous lack of attention to all this vulnerability in my many years of training. Not to mention these little people running around who depend on us.

I imagined myself kicking and punching, infant strapped to my body, nursing in spite of my gymnastics. I take out one attacker, then the other. And go have a beer.


Actually what I really imagined is far too scary to repeat. Part of it involved my slung infant become a shield for any untoward encounters. Him between me and the bad guy. Not my kind of odds.

Not that I walk around expecting horrible things to happen, but after years of training it was only natural for me to test my knowledge in this new and very real life. You don’t have to worry about these things. That’s the job of people like me who have made a hobby of dissecting emergencies and violence and giving you the cliff notes.

Anyway, thus began the quest that ended with Protective Offense and Mommy & Me Self Defense.

Birth of the Mommy & Me Self Defense Audio Program (pun intended)

I had a vision of a live class at every gym, a book, an online class, but I couldn’t get to a yoga class, so I didn’t want to be a hypocrite and tell other women to be SuperMoms – to bring home the bacon, fry it up, and get to self defense class.

Even reading or watching a half hour show was next to impossible. While I was figuring out how to fit in time to take a shower or grab a nap, I could, however, listen to books.

So I started with an audio program, because I thought it would be the easiest thing for new moms to do.

It’s a bit on the serious side – it’s a pretty serious subject – and I hadn’t yet mastered the art of discussing serious things using humor. It’s a tough balance. I hope you enjoy the research that went into it. I hope it makes you feel just a bit more in control.

Minds can be trained just like bodies. With exercise and repetition. Training your mind to question itself and its methods, to examine its environment, requires practice.
